Best Friends

"Of all the things which wisdom provides to make us entirely happy, much the greatest is the possession of friendship."

-Epicurus

Codenames, secret languages, fantasy plan for the future, inside jokes.

Not everyone has someone who knows them inside out.

What is it that makes us pick a human and want to stick around with them?

From the time we are in elementary school to midlife, it seems as though we need to bond with others to survive. In fact, studies show that close relationships make you happier, which makes sense.

We need someone to confide in, depend on, get advice from, laugh with, and just understand you in ways that others might not.

If we had to hold it all in, or had nobody to trust-we might go crazy. Having a friend along our side will reduce stress because you have someone who is always there.

There is one quote that I've heard from Helen Keller, "Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light." It is easier to survive the trials of life with a friend to help you get through tough times and make decisions.

If at all we feel as if we're being replaced, we feel we are abandoned or missing something important, like a secret club. Or maybe we are being gossiped about? For people (which I've found are occasionally females,) is a scary thought because friends are people you generally want to trust. We are afraid that they will tell others our deepest secrets, or about all the things we do wrong.

The psychology of friendship continues to puzzle me.

  1. If we hold it all in, or had no one to trust, we go crazy. I hide from people, and can't even trust myself, let alone others.

Honestly, this probably explains a lot. Not that I can really complain, I enjoy my solitude. Most of the time.
